Rules & Information
Eligibility: The CFMTA Sonatina & Sonata Festival is open to all students up to age 18 who live in Seminole, Orange, Lake, or Osceola counties and/or who are currently studying music under the instruction of a teacher who teaches in one of the above listed counties. Teachers are not required to be members of CFMTA. Students are required to have studied under this teacher for at least 1 semester (at least 6 months) prior to the competition.
Repertoire: Students may enter with a single movement from either a Sonatina or Sonata. Repeats should not be observed unless in da capo form. Should the performance exceed the time limit, the judge will stop the performer. Students can choose to play from memory for a rating or with music for comments only. Scores must be provided for the judge on the day of the competition with all measure numbers marked. Clean and unmarked scores are preferable, but not required. No photo copies will be allowed!
Divisions:
Division I: Ages 8 & Under (Sonatinas)
Division II: Ages 9 -10 (Sonatinas)
Division III: Ages 11 -12 (Sonatinas)
Division IV: Ages 13-14 (Sonatinas)
Division V: Ages 15 - 18 (Sonatinas)
Division VI: Ages 10 & Under (Sonata)
Division VII: Ages 11-12 (Sonata)
Division VIII: Ages 13-14 (Sonata)
Division IX: Ages 15 - 16 (Sonata)
Division X: Ages 17-18 (Sonata)
Students may not enter more than one Division in a given year. Students cannot compete with repertoire they previously competed with. Time limits will be as follows:
Division I - II: 3 minutes
Divisions III - V: 4 minutes
Division VI - VII: 5 minutes
Division VIII - X: 7 minutes
Should a student’s selected repertoire exceed the time limit, the judge will stop the performance at the time limit with the help of the inside monitor. This will not penalize the performer.
Procedures: All assigned competition times will be sent out the week following the registration deadline. Due to the fact that all contestants in a division will perform in the same time block, there can be no schedule requests or changes once the official schedule is published. Within each Division, the order of entrants will be determined at random. All participants should arrive 15-20 minutes prior to their assigned performance time, and should report to the registration desk. There will be a monitor present in the room as the judge evaluates each performer. There will be no warm-up rooms available onsite.
Dress Code: Students are required to observe the CFMTA dress code guidelines.
Judging and Prizes: All students will receive comments on their performance from the adjudicator, and will be given a rating out of 100. All students will receive a certificate of participation as well as a medal based on scoring: gold (94-100), silver (87-93), or bronze medal (80-86). The judge will also choose one winner per division who will be asked to perform on the Winners Recital and who will receive a CFMTA scholarship award. In Divisions with more than 7 participants, a runner up will be selected. The runner up will also be invited to perform on the winner's recital and will receive a scholarship award. It is the judge's perogative to also award honorable mentions to deserving students. Honorable mentions will be verbally recognized but will not be eligible to perform on the winner's recital or receive a scholarship award. Should the winner and/or runner up (if applicable) be unable or unwilling to perform in the Winners Recital, the scholarship award will be forfeited. All comment & rating sheets, certificates, and medals will be presented following the winner's recital.
Winners Recital(s): Following the conclusion of the Sonatina categories and Sonata categories respectively, announcements of winners and the Winner’s Recital will be held. All contestants will be notified as to the time of announcement. Immediately following the announcement, the winners will be invited to perform and receive their scholarship award. Each Division Winner and Runner(s) Up (as applicable) selected by the judge will be invited to perform. This recitals will be free and open to the public. Should a winner/runner up be unwilling or unable to perform their scholarship award is forfeited.
Teacher Responsibility: Teachers who have students participating in the Festival will be asked to volunteer for a portion of the day. Volunteer positions include Registration Desk, Inside Monitor, Outside Monitor, and Awards Assistant. Please coordinate with the Chair regarding your availability and preferences. Should a teacher not be able to meet this obligation, they may send a parent or other responsible adult to volunteer on their behalf. Lunch will be provided for those who volunteer.
Entrance Fee: The entrance fee for this event is $30 for students of CFMTA members, and $50 for students of non-members. Fees must be submitted via PayPal at the time of registration. Should a student need to withdraw from the competition, the entrance fee is non-refundable.
Late Entries: Late entries may be accepted upon special permission of the Event Chair(s). In each instance, a $20 late entry fee will be applied.
Registration Form Errors: Please avoid errors in the registration form. If there are errors or missing information, a $5 administrative fee will be added to the registration.
Copied Music/Judges’ Scores: In adherence with MTNA guidelines, students should NOT bring copied music for the judge. Students are asked to bring a clean (if possible) hard copy of the score with measure numbers. If students are unable to find a hard copy of their intended piece, please contact the Event Chair in advance.
Disclaimers: Teachers are responsible for ensuring that parents and students understand the rules. All judge’s decisions are final, and may not be discussed or disputed with the judge. Any complaints should be reported through the teacher to the festival committee.
